Shamakhi – The Ancient Cultural Center of Azerbaijan
Location
  • Shamakhi District is situated in the northeastern part of Azerbaijan, on the southern slopes of the Greater Caucasus Mountains.

  • It is located about 120 km from Baku.

  • The territory includes both mountainous and plain areas.

History:
  • Shamakhi is one of the oldest cities in Azerbaijan, with a history of around 2,500 years.

  • In the Middle Ages, it served as the capital of the Shirvanshahs state.

  • Due to its location on the Silk Road, it was an important trade and cultural center.

  • Although the city has been destroyed by earthquakes many times, it was always rebuilt and preserved its significance.

Nature
  • The climate is mild: summers are cool, while winters are relatively warm.

  • The mountain slopes are covered with vineyards, orchards, and green forests.

  • Shamakhi is especially famous for its traditions of viticulture and winemaking.

Culture and Landmarks
  • Juma Mosque (built in 743) – one of the oldest mosques in the Caucasus.

  • Yeddi Gumbaz Mausoleums – a historical burial complex of the Shirvanshah dynasty.

  • Shamakhi Astrophysical Observatory – one of the largest astrophysical centers in the South Caucasus.

  • Diri Baba Mausoleum (in Maraza village) – a unique architectural monument and one of the most visited sites.

  • Shamakhi is also renowned for its folklore, mugham music, and poetry traditions.
