Location
  • Mingachevir is located in the northwestern part of Azerbaijan, on the banks of the Kura River.

  • It lies about 300 km from Baku.

  • The city holds great importance both economically and as a tourism destination.

History
  • The history of Mingachevir dates back to ancient times — archaeological discoveries show settlements from the 3rd–2nd centuries BC.

  • Modern Mingachevir was founded in 1948, following the construction of the Mingachevir Hydroelectric Power Station (HPP).

  • During the Soviet era, it was known as the “City of Energy Workers.”

Nature
  • The city’s main natural treasure is the Kura River and the Mingachevir Reservoir, which was built on it.

  • The Mingachevir Reservoir (often called the “Sea of Azerbaijan”) is the largest artificial lake in the country and is important for both energy production and tourism.

  • It offers excellent conditions for fishing, swimming, boating, and recreation.
