Location and Access:
Gobustan Rocks are located approximately 60–70 km from Baku, along the Caspian Sea coast. The area is unique both historically and naturally, offering visitors the opportunity to explore ancient human traces, natural landscapes, and geological features all in one place. Gobustan was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2007 and is one of Azerbaijan’s most visited historical sites.
Historical and Archaeological Significance:
Gobustan contains over 6,000 rock carvings (petroglyphs) that depict prehistoric human activities such as hunting, fishing, boat building, dancing, and religious rituals. The site also includes ancient dwellings, burial sites, and other archaeological findings, confirming continuous human habitation for thousands of years. The first archaeological studies were conducted in 1939 by Iskhag Jafarzade.
Rock Carvings and Special Features:
The rock art at Gobustan is of immense historical and cultural value. Visitors can see depictions of hunting scenes, deer and cattle, boats, dancing humans, and ritual activities. One of the site’s most unique features is the Gaval Dash (tambourine stone), a resonant stone that produces sound when struck, providing a distinctive interactive experience for tourists.
Nature and Geography:
Gobustan is located in a semi-desert climate and is characterized by rugged, rocky terrain. The area is also home to mud volcanoes, adding geological interest and making it a rare and fascinating natural landscape. The rocky and volcanic terrain is ideal for photography and eco-tourism.
