Goygol – The Land of Blue Lakes and Green Mountains in Azerbaijan
Location
  • Goygol District is located in the western part of Azerbaijan, at the foothills of the Lesser Caucasus Mountains.

  • It lies about 360 km from Baku.

  • The region mostly consists of mountainous and forested areas and enjoys a cool and mild climate throughout the year.

History:
  • Goygol District was established in 1930 and was historically known as Khanlar.

  • The town of Helenendorf (now Goygol city) was founded in the 19th century by German settlers invited to the region by the Russian Empire.

  • Because of this, Goygol is widely recognized as the center of German heritage in Azerbaijan.

Nature
  • The main natural treasure of the district is the Goygol Lake, located at an altitude of 1,556 meters at the foot of the Murovdag Range.

  • Alongside Goygol, other beautiful mountain lakes such as Maralgol, Lovigol, and Zaligol add to the area’s breathtaking landscape.

  • The region is home to the Goygol National Park, which protects rich flora and fauna, including hazelnut trees, oaks, elms, pines, and rare animal species.
